The Alternative Learning Communities (ALC) division of ECOT serves kindergarten though 12th grade students in or transitioning out of structured facilities. Our goal is to allow for such organizations to help students continue with their education as they work through the various circumstances that result in their placement.

The ALC sets up a virtual classroom within these facilities from which the students access their curriculum as well as communicate with their online educators. Some of the facilities served by the Alternative Learning Communities include Residential Treatment Centers, Group Homes, Maternity homes, Detention facilities and Orphanages.

In addition, the Alternative Learning Communities has a proven record of catering individually to students referred by Juvenile Justice systems throughout the state of Ohio. In these instances, the ALC provides a computer and access to a free online education to these students in their home settings, (whether court ordered, in foster care or under parent care) until they are ready to return to traditional school. The ALC staff monitors and communicates student progress to caseworkers or probation officers as required by the courts.

When students are ready to return to a traditional school setting, the ALC academic advisor works to ensure that this process is as seamless as possible and that any credits earned while with the ALC are transferred to the new school. The ALC teachers and staff draw from a unique body of experience which allows them to deliver a quality education while operating around the rehabilitative schedules of their client base. In order to meet these needs, ALC teachers often work unconventional office hours and make regular trips to students in the facilities we work with. Additionally, each facility or group served by the ALC is assigned a teacher liaison with whom they have regular contact. The ALC staff also includes a dedicated group of professionals who work to meet the needs of students with special needs.

Upon completion of their rehabilitation, students and their guardians are also offered the option of either continuing with ECOT in a home setting or transitioning back into a traditional school setting. Should a student decide to stay with ECOT, the ALC staff facilitates the process of delivering a computer to the student as well as setting up a high speed internet connection in their home. The ALC staff takes pride in the level of student success we have achieved.
