ECOT students use a personal computer to connect to ECOT's intranet. While some students and families prefer to use their own computer equipment, ECOT offers a loaned computer, monitor, printer/scanner/copier, and software to all enrolled students. ECOT also provides allowances to students to help cover the costs of connecting to ECOT's intranet through a cable or phone line. ECOT strongly encourages a high-speed cable connection. Students can only access ECOT-authorized Web sites from ECOT's secure web-based network, or intranet. Firewalls keep ECOT's intranet safe against unwanted intrusion from outside parties. ECOT's network design ensures compliance with Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and Child Online Protection Act (COPA). The intranet is the gateway to ECOT's learning management system (LMS), called the Student Electronic Portfolio (SEP). Through SEP, each student finds his or her lessons for the day, receives grades, and posts completed coursework. SEP also provides each student direct online contact with his or her teacher and moderated contact with other ECOT students. Because SEP is accessible at any time, students can, guided by ECOT teachers, work at their own pace. This allows students to learn how, when and where they want to- not just in a traditional classroom at a certain time. Such flexibility and freedom has strengthened ECOT's reputation as a popular online alternative to traditional public education. © 2000-2006 Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow. All Rights Reserved.
