Educational research has consistently suggested that parents play a large role in their children's formation of their own academic expectations. The link between close, active parental involvement and academic success has led many parents to choose options such as ECOT over traditional classroom teaching for their children. Unlike the tradional public school, ECOT does not structure each student's day with ringing bells and strict classroom hours. Teachers assign coursework and due dates, but the pace at which those need to be completed is up to the student and his or her parents. Because ECOT students must develop and follow their own daily learning schedule, parental supervision and interaction at the K-8 level is essential for student success. ECOT requires an independence and resourcefulness that some families may occasionally find challenging. Recognizing a need for community, numerous ECOT parents have contacted one another to share experiences and advice, whether through email, online discussion groups, or even in person. This is one of the many ways in which ECOT parents are a vital part of the statewide ECOT community.
